I wake
and watch your sleeping face bathed in refracted light
breath moving in and out,
your life here a gift of my magic.
I rise through layered waters
drawn by a need
to feel naked light on my face.
Though my body aches for the sea
some part of my soul longs for this clarity of
dawn
savoring the hint of roses
in the day's first breeze.
I breach, alone, suspended in air
hybrid creature,
watching shapes still curled into dream
amid brush and tree.
Then my eyes follow the cliffside stair
envisioning how you will climb
soon,
back to your world of city and clamour
when I release my hold
and you struggle for air's breath
and your rightful heritage,
as I dive back down
to my own.
