"Sailing" by Teri Meridian
The waves are long and rolling, perhaps 8 meters apart and 1 meter high. The ocean is deep here, so they flow easily, without cresting or white caps. They are perfect for my Nacra as it is small enough to go over them, rather than the jarring ride of cutting through them with its hulls. The twin hulls are rigged wide, giving me a large stable platform that allows me to take the waves at an angle as I tack on a northerly course. The mainsail is taut in the wind, which I estimate is averaging about 15 knots. The jib is set a bit loose and is luffing slightly after a recent wind shift, but I’m not racing so I let it flutter lightly. I will be tacking in but a minute and will need to adjust it momentarily.
A writing challenge in SecondLife®. Writings inspired by works of art in the OZLAND Art Gallery
What are Ozlandish Writings?
From July 2010 to December 2014 we ran OZLAND PICTURE STORIES as described below. Sadly though the number of writers reduced over the years and we decided to call it a day. We leave these as a record of the good times we had.
Are "You" ready to challenge your writing skills? Then participate in our OZLAND Picture Stories writing series at The Ozland Art Gallery.
Each month a new picture will be picked, from our OZLAND Artist of the Month collection, with different themes. Your goal is to write a 500-1000 word... poem... essay... or story about the picture picked. This is a chance for you to challenge your writing skills each month. Story can be written in ANY genre... sci fi... romance... ghost... fantasy... fiction... non-fiction... biography... mystery... historical... whatever your writing genre... feel free to experiment. Send your writing inworld to Sven Pertelson as a notecard to have it included on the web site. We meet at the The Ozland Art Gallery each Wednesday at Noon and 6pm SLT to read the latest submissions on voice. More Information

"Magnum Opus" by Teri Meridian
"Magnum Opus" by Teri Meridian
Tonight was going to be the night. Sitting here, at my desk, I was going to finally write something that would put me on the map, so to speak, as a serious writer. My desk lamp now has a new “Natural Radiance” light bulb, which produces light of the same colour temperature as the sun – natural, warm, and soothing, according to the propaganda on the box. My faux leather chair has been adjusted to position me at the best height for writing, my feet flat on the floor, and my back fully supported. I’ve duct-taped a pillow to the back rest where I needed a little extra lumbar support.

"PattyCake" by Teri Meridian
"PattyCake" by Teri Meridian
inspired by "Ed is Dead" by Van Caerndow
"Hey, Patty! Nice day to die, right amigo?"
I hated it when they called me that. My name wasn't Patrick and I wasn't of Irish descent. I was a native New Yorker, with a mother from Paris and a father from London. "Patty" was really just half of their name for me -- "Cow Patty" -- since in their eyes I was little more than cattle dung. Or, at the very least, it was what they thought of the cheap tin badge that read "United States Marshal" pinned to my coat. You would have thought that Uncle Sam could have at least made it out of silver or gold. If a man was going to put his life on the line for something then make its symbol worth a few dollars.

"The Kiss" part 2 by Teri Meridian (for part 1 see July 2012)
"The Kiss" part 2 by Teri Meridian (for part 1 see July 2012)
Gale stood there, frozen, unable to raise her hand and knock. The sound of laughter from behind the door and the knowledge that her lover was not alone was a situation that she had not prepared herself to face. The desk clerk's words echoed in her mind, "Going up to join them?" as the realisation struck her like hammer; whether she went in or just slipped down the back stairs and into the street, it would be whispered and assumed that she had participated in a lesbian orgy. Her future, her reputation, and her self-respect, was irrevocably shattered. Heartbroken, confused, and feeling very alone, she sank to the floor and began to sob.

The Ozland Zombie Apocalypse Plan by Teri Meridian
The Ozland Zombie Apocalypse Plan by Teri Meridian
1. Introduction
Ozland, one of the premier residential communities in Second Life, has been sadly negligent in its planning for major events. As of this date, there are no prepared plans for Zombie Apocalypses, Impacts from SimKiller Asteroids, or Invasions by Hostile Space Aliens (Note: X Minus 1 episodes do not count as Alien Invasion Instructions or Plans). This document is the first in a serious of community plans and is intended to provide residents with useful, timely, and important information on how to deal with impending doom, fashion disasters, and other significant events. Please study it carefully and be prepared to contribute to the defense of Ozland. Queen Llola needs YOU!

Exchange by Teri Meridian
Exchange by Teri Meridian
Tiana moaned softly and clutched her head, desperately trying to squeeze out the throbbing pain behind her eyes. Though faeries were not supposed to get headaches and other such common ailments, she had somehow done something to bring on this misery. Closing her eyes, she clenched her jaw and tensed as another bolt of pain shot through her head.

"Ignition" by Teri Meridian
"Ignition" by Teri Meridian
Rumour had it that one only ever entered a dragon's lair uninvited once in one's lifetime -- the unsaid conclusion being that one never lived long enough to leave and re-enter. While some dragons chose to live in the woodlands or on mountain tops, the oldest and most powerful dragons inhabited the bones of the earth, deep in rocky caves. It was such a dragon that Nyx had sought out. An older and more powerful beast that would give her the best chance of fae immortality. Standing in the shadow of the cliff, staring into the blackness of the cavern, Nyx felt her knees tremble and almost buckle. She knew her courage would fail if she stood here much longer, so taking a deep breath, she began to walk forwards into the darkness.

"Metamorphosis" by Teri Meridian
"Metamorphosis" by Teri Meridian
Nyx Aurelia was a common brown wood sprite -- a species of lesser fae found in the boreal forests of eastern North America and northern Europe. As far as sprites went, she was unremarkable, being of average height, around 18 inches tall in her best boots, and pleasantly attractive, at least by wood sprite standards, with a small rounded face, thin lips, a pert upthrust nose, and long auburn hair. As she stared at herself in the still water of her reflecting pool, she smiled softly, knowing that today was going to be the end. One way or another, she would cease to exist by the time the sun set and twilight covered the forest.
