Santa leaned back in his black reindeer leather lay-z-boy, put his winter-booted feet up on an old bourbon crate, and took a long swig of Budweiser. After swilling the warm, flat, beer around his mouth, he spewed it over the railing onto one of the elves working below, letting out a deep belly laugh as he gave the little twerp a beer shower. Sighing because his beer was now too warm to enjoy, he lit up a nice Cuban cigar and inhaled a lungful of the sweet, rum-dipped, tobacco smoke before flinging the half-full beer can at a passing elf. Ah well, it was almost noon and he hated drinking more than a couple of dozen beer before his lunch. It was time to switch to Jack and Eggnog. Feeling a rumbling in his stomach, he let out a long carbonated, beer smelling, belch and closed his eyes for a short nap under his sunlamp.
A writing challenge in SecondLife®. Writings inspired by works of art in the OZLAND Art Gallery
What are Ozlandish Writings?
From July 2010 to December 2014 we ran OZLAND PICTURE STORIES as described below. Sadly though the number of writers reduced over the years and we decided to call it a day. We leave these as a record of the good times we had.
Are "You" ready to challenge your writing skills? Then participate in our OZLAND Picture Stories writing series at The Ozland Art Gallery.
Each month a new picture will be picked, from our OZLAND Artist of the Month collection, with different themes. Your goal is to write a 500-1000 word... poem... essay... or story about the picture picked. This is a chance for you to challenge your writing skills each month. Story can be written in ANY genre... sci fi... romance... ghost... fantasy... fiction... non-fiction... biography... mystery... historical... whatever your writing genre... feel free to experiment. Send your writing inworld to Sven Pertelson as a notecard to have it included on the web site. We meet at the The Ozland Art Gallery each Wednesday at Noon and 6pm SLT to read the latest submissions on voice. More Information

Nobody Home by Tami (and Zhu Juran)
Nobody Home
By Tami (and Zhu)
Robert grabbed the magazine from his desk and flung it at the wall. Without strong aerodynamic properties, it tumbled end over end, pages fluttering until it struck the cheap paneling and fell to the floor, open to page 32 and the full page spread of the latest Faith Maxwell exhibit at the museum. He took a deep gulp of Pepsi, drinking straight from the two quart bottle, and let the warm fizzy liquid roll around his mouth, effervescing on his tongue. Disgusted and irritated he spat the liquid onto the magazine, as though he were a god showering black fetid rain upon the virtual landscapes within.

The Ennui of Sargon (by tami and zhu)
The Ennui of Sargon (by tami and zhu)
inspired by the artwork "Santa Special" by Sven/Llola
Arwin rubbed her eyes, trying to wake up. She’d had that dream again, where she was someone else, and looking for someone she’d lost. It was such a sad dream, and so real! Arwin wished she knew what it meant. Oh, but she was driving the Santa Special today! That should be fun, she’d been looking forward to it. She dressed quickly and headed out the door - it wouldn’t do to be late for the Santa Special!

Chalk Lashes: A Modern Tragedy by Tami
Chalk Lashes: A Modern Tragedy by Tami
Standing at the chalkboard, the child does as the teacher asks. Carefully, using lots and lots of colours, a face is drawn, starting with the eyes. They are amazing, just like all the beautiful girls in the catalogues -- with really long, thick, lush lashes. A nose is added, but before the lips can be drawn, the child stops. It's a beautiful, pretty, girls face and the child knows, with a sense of understanding few will ever achieve, that the face is a dream beyond attainment. So, tears are drawn instead of the mouth. The teacher asks why, but the child has learned not to talk about feelings and answers, "just because."

"O.K. now kitten, I want you to draw your face."
"But why, mommy? I don't wanna draw a face. I don't even wanna do this stupid art. Why do I gotta?"

Explorations: Part 2 of an Ongoing Saga by Tami and Trybil
Explorations: Part 2 of an Ongoing Saga by Tami and Trybil
So here I am, flapping my ears as I hover here, watching the circus below me. Just don't call me Dumbo, or you will regret it. So much has happened, in not so many turns of the world I created...

The Mystery of Wilmot by Tami
The Mystery of Wilmot by Tami
In the town of Wilmot, in the hills of Eastern Pennsylvania, near a valley they call the Grand Canyon, a mystery lies unsolved. One fateful night, when the clouds hung low and the town was shrouded in a blanket of mist, five peace loving, law abiding citizens went missing. Though the police and fire departments scoured the hills and volunteer divers combed the rivers, no bodies were found. Today, 48 years, 3 months, and 7 days later, only I and my siblings, and soon you, know what truly happened. It is not a secret and I will tell all who ask, but nobody has asked. Now, as my daughter, you will be initiated into a select group as you too learn the dreadful truth.

"The Birth of Venus" by Trybil and Tami
"The Birth of Venus" by Trybil and Tami
I try to open my eyes, but I can't. It is as if they aren't there. Or, maybe they are open and there literally is nothing to see. I'm not sure how this could happen. The lack of anything is truly unnerving. If I am in total darkness then it would be familiar or at least understandable. However, this total nothingness is unlike anything I can possibly imagine. Perhaps this is how a blind person experiences the world. Am I blind then?

Vixen by Tami
Vixen by Tami
Trish grunted. It was not a lady-like grunt, nor was it one caused by physical exertion. It was an honest to goodness, completely frustrated, had enough, grunt. She turned to her team-mate, a frown on her face. "It's not going to fit. No matter what we do, we're not going to get the advanced program code with all its new modules and components into the storage unit. It's simply too big!"

Couture by Tami
Couture by Tami
Arnaz was flustered to say the least. In two hours he would either be a rising star or another failed disciple at the altar of fine couture; another "never was." His debut on the world stage was but 90 minutes from commencing and when it did, everyone that mattered would be viewing his collection. The fashion writers of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and L'Officiel, among others, would be touting his genius or advertising his imminent departure from relevance. He had but one chance to begin ascendency in the world of high fashion, and that chance was almost upon him.

A Quilt's Eye View by Tami
A Quilt's Eye View by Tami
The world when seen from the perspective of a quilt is a very different place. Though a quilt may last for many generations, it is incredibly rare for one to survive that long since most simply disintegrate as ultra violet rays slowly, but surely, break down the molecular bonds of their fibres. As sunlight patiently eats away at their strength, they start to rip and tear, needing patches and repair, until one day their owner decides that it is time for a replacement. What follows for the quilt would cause the quilt to tremble, if it was able to tremble, and can include burial alive within a landfill, burning on a rubbish heap, or shredding to produce recycled fibres -- none of which is pleasant for the quilt.

Wanna Go Get Some Breakfast? by Tami
Wanna Go Get Some Breakfast? by Tami
The sun slipped from below the horizon, peeking between the trees that festooned the hilltops. From the surface of the river, in their boat bobbing amidst the cool, foggy, morning air, Tanya and Michelle sat in silence, enjoying the warm golden rays of the new day. They rose early each morning, and together welcomed the day, hand in hand, rain or shine, summer or winter. Their private ritual had been going on for over half a century and they had yet to miss a sunrise together.
